Solar air heaters – higher temperatures

By: Alan Nurick – regular contributor

In a previous article, the use of solar air heaters (SAH) to heat air to temperatures of the order of 80oC was considered. We now consider higher temperatures

The SAH previously considered were comprised essentially of flatbed collectors mostly covered with glass and without the benefit of solar concentrators. In many cases, methods of increasing heat transfer from heated surfaces to the air passing through the SAH were incorporated to increase the effectiveness and thermal efficiencies, but the maximum temperatures of the air was limited. It was noted that such SAH could be used for space heating, absorption refrigeration, seasoning of timber, or wherever the use of air with temperatures of up to 80oC could be beneficial.

Air heated by solar irradiance can be used to contribute to the energy needs of an industry. Continued from RACA Journal November

With an abundance of solar energy in South Africa (and other countries) and the need for heat for many applications including space heating, chemical processing, absorption refrigeration, and drying to name a few, air heated by solar irradiance can be used to alleviate energy needs in industry.

There is reason to believe that ‘lighting’ systems need to be extended to ensure that irradiance, which activates the human circadian system, is included at the design stage of buildings
