Full house for SAIRAC JHB’s psychrometrics course

The Johannesburg centre of the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SAIRAC) successfully ran its first course for 2017 – Psychrometrics.

The course took place over three evenings in February at the ACRA training facility in Kempton Park, Johannesburg and 19 people attended.

It was presented by Jannie Potgieter, project engineer at Booyco Engineering who holds a B.Eng: Mechanical and M.Eng from North West University, Potchefstroom.

Upon completing the SAIRAC psychrometric course, ‘students’ should be able to:

  • Understand the various thermodynamic properties of moist air.
  • Use these properties to analyse conditions and processes involving moist
  • Use psychrometric charts to establish the inter-relationship between these
    properties from the charts.
  • Perform the calculations necessary in respect to the removal or addition of
sensible and latent heat from space to be air conditioned.
  • Illustrate the various processes on a psychrometric chart to
    simplify their calculations.

SAIRAC’s courses are aimed to bridge the gap between artisan/technician level and engineers.

*Psychrometrics is used to describe the field of engineering concerned with the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. The Greek word psuchron means ‘cold’ and metron means ‘measurement’.
